Soothing Solutions For Eczema Relief

Living with Eczema

Eczema is a chronic skin condition that affects babies, children, and adults. Some may "outgrow" this condition while others experience flares throughout life. These itchy or inflamed patches can be seen in several areas of the body like the torso, face or neck, but the most common areas are inside the elbows and behind the knees. Eczema can often appear as red, irritated, scaly patches. On darker skin tones, however, it can appear as thickened, hyperpigmented, raised bumps or karger patches.

Causes

The cause of Eczema is can be from multiple factors, there can often be a genetic component or it can arise as the result of environmental triggers. Patients can often experience triggers from stress, certain foods, allergens, harsh detergents, soaps and perfumes, or extreme temperatures. For individuals with Eczema, daily moisturizing is crucial in helping to prevent flares. In the hot days of summer and the dry cold days of winter, properly moisturizing the entire body will go a long way with aiding in treatment results.

Creams are Better than Lotions

Identifying the best moisturizer for your skin is key. We recommend applying a hydrating cream moisturizer to your skin two to three minutes after your shower or bath. Thicker creams, versus lighter lotions, are the most effective moisturizer. A few of my favorites for this season are Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream, Vanicream Moisturizing Cream, CeraVe Cream, and La Roche-Posay Lipakar AF Cream.
